Happy National Cheeseburger Day

(PCM) You may have said goodbye to summer barbecues and cookouts, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave burgers behind! Cheeseburgers are an American favorite; in fact, so much so that there’s a national holiday to honor them!

Chances are, you don’t need a reason to indulge in a big juicy burger, any day of the year, but Foursquare, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, and Kraft Foods have all teamed up to give us a little extra push to celebrate cheeseburgers today. For every Foursquare check-in at a Five Guys today, Kraft Foods will donate the equivalent of a meal at the restaurant (approx. $12.50) to Feeding America, an organization that operates food banks across the United States. So before you head out, take a moment to visit kraftcheese.com/checkin and connect your Foursquare account. This promotion will be offered for the next two weeks.

A few interesting cheeseburger facts:

The average American eats 3 burgers per week, or 150 burgers per year.

The largest cheeseburger ever made in the world weighed in at a whopping 777 pounds, and 1.375 million calories! Created June 2, 2011 at the Alameda County Fair in California by Juicy’s, the giant burger featured 50 pounds of cheese, and the bun alone weighed in at 272 pounds. Fairgoers were able to purchase 99-cent portions of the monstrous cheeseburger to eat! Complete coverage can be found here.

In July 2012, a Southern California burger chain, Slater’s 50/50, celebrated the birth of America with The ‘Merica Burger – the chain’s July burger of the month. But forget the ground beef; this burger is made with 100 percent ground bacon. Just pure bacon ground up, grilled, and topped with a sunny-side-up egg, bacon chedder cheese, and bacon island dressing – probably the most unhealthy burger ever created (for a limited-time at least)!

According to Eat This Not That, the worst burger in America is Chili’s Jalapeño Smokehouse Bacon Burger, with 1,910 calories, 126 g fat (43 g saturated), and 5,290 mg sodium. Thanks to a patty piled high with tortilla strips, bacon, cheddar, mayo, and jalapeno-ranch dressing, it’s not only an entire day’s worth of calories, but it also has more than 2 days’ worth of saturated fat and as much sodium as you’d find in 6 pounds of McDonald’s fries.
