Pregnancy has brought some strange new cravings for Beyonce. “She’s snacking on Oreo biscuits and gherkins,” says a source. “Bounty ice creams with hot chili sauce and she loves dipping bananas in ketchup. For breakfast, she’s been having croissants with melted Dime bars inside.” Bananas in ketchup?! I’m not sure how anyone would even be able to put a finger on that craving. Who thinks of dipping bananas in ketchup?
Her pregnancy cravings might sound gross to the rest of us, and in fact, there IS something that’s turning her stomach: the smell of her husband, Jay-Z! While promoting her new fragrance, Pulse, Beyonce told ET Canada, “I smell everything. If it smells bad, I smell it. My husband’s fragrance, his one that I always love, I hate right now. So thank God I have this one!”
Poor Jay-Z! He’s probably whipping her up these strange, stomach-renching combinations, and she’s the one grossed out!
If you’ve ever been pregnant this might not sound so strange! According to BabyCenter.com, about half of women in the United States report at least one food craving during pregnancy. BabyCenter moms confessed to wanting “pickles wrapped in cheese, salsa spooned straight out of the jar, and even steak fat. And where in the spectrum of sweet, salty, spicy, and sour does one woman’s passion for black olives on Sara Lee cheesecake lie?”
Some dietitians and herbalists believe that certain cravings are meaningful, signifying a deficiency in some type of nutrient. For example, a shortage of magnesium can trigger a craving for chocolate. However, there is no scientific explanation for what causes pregnancy cravings like ice cream and chili or bananas and ketchup, and it’s perfectly healthy to indulge in them! Just keep the really gross ones in the kitchen!
