I can’t decide what my favorite food is, that is like picking out your favorite Modern Family character – it is just too difficult. What I do know is there are certain foods I crave, and every time I hear that my mom is making them I jump for joy.
And when I say “jump” I should say run as last week my mom told me she was making crab cakes so I actually sprinted out of work to the train so I wouldn’t miss an extra half hour of crab caking. Although I was exhausted and my muscles hurt by the time I got home; it was worth it.
The problem with this dish is that it is so risky. I would love to order it from restaurants every time I see it on the menu, but you have to fear the quality of it. Some places can make an excellent crab cake, but with some you can smell the “fishyness” as soon as they are walking to your table.
That is why I drop everything when my mom makes them, because they are perfect. Since the crab meat is so expensive she has to wait for it to go on sale at ShopRite, or she will pick up a big can of it at Costco. It never has a fish smell, especially when she combines it with peppers and breadcrumbs. Sometimes she fries them and sometimes she bakes them, but whatever way those crabbies cook they are always delicious.
Pair it with a homemade horseradish sauce and you are one happy camper – I mean – crabber!
