Meaty News and Tips

Protein is an important part of a healthy diet, and meat is one of the best sources of the muscle-building nutrient! But as you are probably fully aware, meat can be expensive, especially when you’re feeding a family. Luckily, you don’t have to eat meat to get your protein in; in fact, Americans seem to be catching on: According to the USDA, Americans are eating less meat on average (from 184 pounds per person in 2004 to 166 pounds per person today).

Whether that’s because Americans are trying to eat healthier by cutting back on red meat or because it’s too expensive may not be clear, but one thing is certain: it’s definitely a good thing!

Beans, legumes, quinoa, tofu and eggs are all good sources of protein – plus, they’re all low in fat and high in nutrients. You can also always turn to frozen vegetarian meals when you’re stumped; there are a variety of meatless brands out there from Boca to MorningStar and Amy’s Organics.

Or, if you’re not ready to give up eating meat everyday, but need a price break, here are a few suggestions:

1. Buy in bulk. You don’t necessarily need a Costco or Sam’s Club membership to get the best deals. Check the circulars for all the grocery stores near you, and see what stores are having a sale on your favorite meat. When you see a great price, buy in bulk and freeze the extra meat. You never know when it’ll be back on sale.

2. According to DailyFinance, supermarkets generally mark down prices in the mornings, so the best time to shop is in the middle of the day to score the best deals and selection.

3. Sometimes all you have to do is ask. If you see that a package of meat or poultry is approaching its sell-by date, ask a store manager if the price can be lowered. They’ll often give you a price break!
