Some days are bright and cheery and you feel good about who you are and what you are. Some days are OK, nothing special, you get up and go about your business and finish out your day with dinner and the TV, or maybe a book before bed. Other days, the bad days, make you feel worthless and wonder why you are working for a goal you’re not sure that is even worth it anymore. I think they call this life.
I don’t know about you, but there are certain songs that help me out on days like this, days where everything hurts. Not surprisingly most of them come from musicals; I think that’s because musicals show the whole length and width of the human experience. Love, hate, passion, family, joy and faith are just a few of the topics that songs from musicals convey.
When I am running on low, songs like “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Every Mountain,” “Don’t Rain On My Parade.”, “Fortuosity,” “I Like Life”, “It’s Today” and “Open A New Window” all convey to me that there is hope and there is a reason to keep on trying.
That’s not to say that there aren’t other types of music that help. Songs like “Bad Day,” I’m A Believer.” “The Lord’s Prayer”, “I Believe” and “What A Wonderful World,” help too. Songs of Faith like “I Will Wait,” “Hold Me Jesus,” and “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” help me to realize that God is there for me and Jesus does hold me when it really hurts, even when I can’t see him or feel him.
These songs are in some ways anthems. Songs to hold on to when times get tough and you want to give up. I encourage you today to find music that will inspire you to go forward, because as Mary Poppins sings in the Broadway Production, “Anything Can Happen If You Let It.”
