One way to help facilitate any goal is to remember one simple thing. Put others before yourself.
Losing weight or trying to scale Mount Everest have one thing in common. You have to get yourself out of the way, and one way to that is to remember to be kind.
Kindness is thinking about others and doing things for them, when you would normally be thinking and doing things for yourself. When you put the needs of someone else before your own you are no longer thinking about yourself. The thought of what I am about to eat or drink goes into second place as you put someone else in first.
I think it is interesting that in mountain climbing everyone is roped together. If you are attached in some way you have to be thinking about the safety of those you are attached to. It is no longer just about you, but about everyone involved.
This column has me attached to every one of you. When I sit down to write, not only am I thinking about ways to get through the day myself, but also ways to help and inspire you. Also my words are now in print for everyone to see, so I have a responsibility to live by them. If I just write with no action these words are meaningless. I have to think about all of you and let my actions show that these are not just words.
As we all go into the days ahead, let us put the needs of someone else before our own. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. Get a cup of coffee for a co-worker who looks stressed. Listen to someone you know needs to talk. Make a phone call to brighten some ones day. Be deliberate in your kindness and you will find your own burden a bit less hard to bear.
