(PCM) Bad news for bacon lovers! The World Health Organization (WHO) will be publishing a new report that claims consuming processed meats such as bacon, sausage or ham can be as harmful to your health and well-being as smoking. It is the claim of the World Cancer Research Fund that they have seen strong evidence supporting the theory that consuming a lot of red meat can lead to bowel cancer and consuming even a small bit of processed meat can increase an individuals cancer risk as well.
WHO backs up their report by saying that individuals who consume a large amount of red meat in their diet fail to counterbalance by eating more plant-based foods which can protect against certain forms of cancer. They also say that processed meat contains a lot of dangerous preservatives that contain cancer-causing substances.
The World Cancer Research Fund makes the recommendation that individuals should consume no more than 500 grams of red meat per week and that only includes beef, pork and lamb. The report claims that processed meats are “carcinogenic to humans” which could lead to strong repercussions felt throughout the food industry as a whole.
