If it seems like your circulation is getting worse as the weather drops, it probably is. In fact, it’s more common than people realize. My fingers go numb the second cold air hits my hands, and my feet…forget about it! But in the spring and summer I never have any issues with my circulation. So what’s the deal?
As the temperature drops, your superficial venous circulation slows down, which means your body has to work harder to get blood from your feet back to your heart. Regular exercise – even just walking around as often as possible – can also help keep the blood flowing. Dr. Luis Navarro of the Vein Treatment Center in New York City suggests getting your feet 6 to 12 inches above your heart at least once a day.
Rest your feet on top of a few stacked pillows on the couch or in bed while watching TV, or lay on the floor and put your feet up on the couch. Do this everyday for a week and see if you notice a difference!
