Summer Hair Care Tips

Your skin isn’t the only thing that needs protection from harmful rays and summer heat. UV rays and the hot summer sun can really do damage on your locks, stripping your hair of its color, drying it out, and even burning your scalp.

People tend to wash their hair more in the summer than any other season. Instead of washing it everyday, which can strip the hair of its natural oils, try a dry shampoo. It will eliminate any odors lingering in your hair, and add a little volume for a beautiful, fresh style. On the days you wash and condition it normally, opt for sulfate-free shampoo, which is gentler on your hair and great for dry, colored hair.

Speaking of colored hair, avoid coloring or highlighting your hair before a beach trip. UV rays not only change your hair color, but will add to the drying effect from dying and coloring.

Before swimming, comb your regular sunscreen through your strands, which will form a barrier that prevents chlorine and salt water from stripping your color and drying out hair. It’s also a good idea to apply sunscreen to your scalp where your hair parts – your scalp needs protection, too.

And finally, you wouldn’t walk out the door without a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes, so don’t forget about the other protective accessories: hats and head scarves! A hat or head scarf is always in style, and will do wonders in protecting your scalp from burns.
