Summer Supplements To Help Combat the Season Ahead

Believe it or not, there are some supplements that are more beneficial in the summer season than winter or fall. That’s because summer activities, like barbecuing and laying out by the pool, can actually be harmful to your health if you don’t take preventative measures. Dr. Oz recommends 3 vital supplements that you may need to keep it healthy all summer long!

Of course, you should always wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun, but sunscreen isn’t the only step you should be taking to protect yourself. Did you know that lycopene, the nutrient found in tomatoes, can protect your skin from UV burns? According to Dr. Oz, a British study found that participants who ate 5 tablespoons of tomato paste with 10 grams of olive oil a day for 12 weeks were 33% less likely to burn from UV exposure than those who only ate olive oil. Researchers believe it was due to the lycopene producing procollagen, a molecule which helps protect the skin!

So, in addition to making sure you always have tons of tomatoes on hand this summer, you may want to supplement your lycopene intake with a supplement. Try taking 16 mg per day, but don’t forget to keep slathering on that sunscreen!

Firing up the grill for barbecues is an American summer must! But the problem is, it’s not exactly as healthy as you’d think – even if you opt for chicken breast and turkey burgers. That’s because cooking meat at high temperatures releases chemicals known as advanced glycation end products or AGEs, which, according to Dr. Oz., promote oxidative stress and cellular inflammation, leading to premature wrinkles and, over time, even heart disease and Alzheimer’s.

Combar those AGE’s by taking a L-carnosine supplement, which contains potent antioxidants. This is especially important as you age, as natural carnosine levels in the body have been shown to decrease by 63% between ages 10 and 70. Take 500 mg of L-carnosine twice per day.

And all that grilling and time spent in the sun can really take a lot out of you! Dr. Oz says you should reinvigorate with reishi mushroom extract, which will help boost insulin levels and allow the body to more efficiently use blood sugar for energy production. Try taking 1000 mg of the extract 3 times a day.
