An apple a day may not keep the doctor away forever, but it is one of the healthiest fruits you can eat. In fact, apples are considered super fruits!
What makes a fruit “super”? According to nutrition scientists, super foods are packed with antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and other nutrients that help you live longer, prevent disease, among other benefits. Nutritionists recommend eating 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables each day, focusing on super foods as your main source.
Apples are a great source of fiber, but you have to eat the skin! The skin contains quercetin, an antioxidant that packs antihistamine and anti-inflammatory power, and may help protect you from heart disease and even allergic reactions, according to Health. A study from St. George’s Hospital Medical School in London found that people who eat five or more apples a week actually have better lung function than those who don’t!
And unlike many super fruits, like acai berries, pomegranates, and dragon fruit, you can find apples just about anywhere – from supermarkets, to health stores, to convenience stores and gas stations! So, there’s no excuse not to get at least one super fruit in each day. However, buy organic apples when you can. They are at the top of the Dirty Dozen list!
