This review could possibly be deemed biased due to my obsession with hummus, but at the same time who better to review a product than a hummus addict? To be honest, I usually avoid Tribe hummus because although it is one of the tastiest brands out there, I always thought it was higher in calories and fat. This isn’t a problem if you eat it sparingly and don’t find yourself eating half the container at a sitting, but like I said, I really like hummus.
But at second look, Tribe hummus only has 10-20 more calories per serving, and that’s compared to the lowest calorie hummus brands out there (on average, hummus has 50-80 calories per 2T serving). So for a while I was making hummus at home, ommiting tahini and olive oil to reduce calories, and adding an array of spices to make up for lost flavor.
That was until I tasted Tribe’s new flavors and realized what I’ve been missing out on!
My low calorie, fat-free, and completely bland hummus is no comparison to this stuff. I was missing out on some seriously good eats, and for what? To save a few calories? So not worth it. Tribe has to be one of, if not the best tasting hummus out there. Not to mention, it’s one of the healthiest dips you can eat!
A 2 T serving of Tribe hummus has 60-70 calories. It’s kosher-certified and vegan-friendly, and free of artificial preservatives, saturated and trans-fats, hydrogenated oils, dairy, and cholesterol.
The main ingredients in hummus are chickpeas, tahini and olive oil. Chikpeas are full of fiber and protein, and tahini and olive oil are great sources of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats – the good fats!
Hummus is a healthy snack that is delicious as a dip served with raw veggies, pita, crackers or chips. Use it as a dressing on salads – cold or hot. Spread it on sandwiches and hamburgers in place of mayonnaise and other condiments. Try a hummus wrap topped with bean sprouts, tomatoes and feta cheese. There’s so much you can with hummus, especially with all these new flavors! Tribe has introduced Tribe with Toppings – in 4 new varieties of hand-crafted flavors that sit on top of the their classic flavor hummus. Here are the 4 flavors I tried:
Savory Mushroom – Earthy and flavorful with a rich assortment of spices. I usually don’t like mushrooms but I loved this flavor!
Cilantro Chimichurri – A zesty blend of fresh cilantro and spices inspired by the South American classic. Possibly my favorite, it has a unique, refreshing taste that would taste delicious on just about anything.
Mediterranean Style – A light drizzle of olive oil and dusting of paprika on top of classic hummus. SO good! This reminded me of the classic flavor, but even better.
Olive Tapenade – Chopped Mediterranean olives with a savory herb kick. OK, maybe this one is my favorite. This would definitely be my number one choice for cooking with.
I love the new flavors, and especially like the new “topping” factor. I think it tastes best to mix it well before serving, but those little bits and pieces of herbs, spices and the drizzle of olive oil make it feel more ethnic, decadent and fresh!
Tribe Hummus has also gone green! The new containers are clear so you can actually see what you’re buying, and they are made with 100% recyclable materials. Nice!
