Where Does the Best Fast-Food Breakfast Sandwich Come From?

If you’re thinking it must come from Dunkin’ Donuts, or perhaps even McDonald’s, you thought wrong! Believe it or not, the best breakfast sandwich comes from Subway – according to Consumer Reports anyway.

They graded the nutrition of 106 egg sandwiches from the most popular fast food joints, including Burger King, Dunkin’ Donuts, McDonald’s, Starbucks, and Wendy’s. After finding the most nutritious choices at each chain – from looking at calories, fats, sodium, sugars, and fiber – Consumer Reports had tasters try a sample of each of the more nutritious sandwiches. Tasters visited at least three locations per chain, except for Wendy’s because its breakfast sandwiches won’t actually go national until later this year (so don’t rule Wendy’s out just yet!).

And Subway blew away the competition.

Of the 106 choices, just six rated Very Good for nutrition, and all of those came from Subway! No breakfast sandwiches from Burger King, McDonald’s, or Wendy’s rated better than fair.

Subway came out on top when it got down to taste, too. Only one sandwich rated Very Good on taste: Subway’s Egg White and Cheese on Mornin’ Flatbread.

Consumer Reports offers 3 suggestions for the next time you’re searching for a good breakfast sandwich:

1. Ask for any of these sandwiches well toasted; toasting blended the flavors and made the bread taste better. 2. If you’re looking for good nutrition, skip cheese or meat, substitute egg whites for whole eggs, or avoid a footlong.
3. Eat right away, because quality fell as the sandwiches cooled off.
