Want your kids to eat more vegetables? Try giving veggies a fun new name! Believe it or not, it can make a BIG difference in intake consumption among young children, according to new research.
A new study from Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab found that when carrots were labeled and presented as “X-ray Vision Carrots” instead of “Food of the Day,” school lunchroom intake more than doubled among elementary school children.
“This research suggests that schools have a low-cost or even no-cost solution to induce children to consume more nutritious foods,” said lead study author, Brian Wansink, of Cornell’s Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management.
Researchers followed up with a second study in two neighboring NYC suburban schools. This time, they saw vegetable sales increase by 99 percent in the school that offered “Power Punch Broccoli” and “Silly Dilly Green Beans” compared the unnamed vegetables at the other school.
Get created! Start using these and other silly names in the kitchen and at the dinner table, and you just might be surprised!
