You Might Have Thrown Away 400 Pounds of Food Last Year

The average American throws away an astounding 400 pounds of food every year. In 2010, that equated to over 33 million tons of trash. So, why are we throwing away so much food?

It’s simple: we buy more than we need. People overestimate what they need when they are at the store, and buy extra items just in case. Then, factor in savings from buying in bulk, and you end up with more food that you can possibly eat before it reaches the expiration date.

It may sound counterproductive, but try making more trips to the grocery store. If you’re only making 2 or 3 shopping trips a month, they are likely to be big buys, and too much food at a time pretty much always guarantees something will go bad. At the least, stop buying produce from the grocery store, and start making weekly trips to a produce or farmer’s market! You’ll save money, and a lot less will go to waste!
