10 Tips for an Active, Healthy Family

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that children get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. With schools across the nation cutting funding for physical education, it’s more important than ever to make sure your family is getting enough exercise. Remember, adults should be exercising too, at a minimum of 2 and a half hours a week!

Instead of logging your hours on a treadmill at the gym, make it a family effort. Getting the whole family involved in fitness will make it easier to stick to, and much more fun! So get off the couch and get moving with these family fun activities:

Instead of turning the TV on when kids get home from school, play catch, go for a bike ride, or play tag!

Go for a family walk or bike ride after dinner.

Crank up some music when you’re cooking dinner and have the kids help cook and dance around the kitchen with you.

Don’t just take the dog outside when he has to go – take him and the whole family for a long walk.

Go to the dog park or playground.

Walk the kids to school if you’re within walking distance.

On the weekend take the family to the zoo, museums, and on hikes and picnics where kids can run around and have fun.

Make chores a family affair – get the children to help rake, weed, shovel snow with you. It’s great exercise for everyone and gets the job done faster!

Exercise together! Pop in a fun workout video that the whole family can participate in.

Train together for a charity walk/run.
