Fashion Tip of the Day: Extending the life of your hosiery

How long does a pair of pantyhose usually last you? One wear, maybe two if you’re careful? Not only are knicks, holes, and runs frustrating and well, embarrassing – it usually means the pair is garbage once it happens. This can get expensive! Buying pair after pair of new pantyhose really adds up over time.

So what’s a girl to do? The key is to extend its life so you don’t have to.

Start with buying the right type. Avoid nylons and go for pairs that are at least 15% Lycra or spandex, which are the most durable. Of course, you always want to make sure you have clear nail polish with you in case you get a run while you’re out, but that will only keep existing runs from getting worse. If you want to keep those annoying tears from happening in the first place, you have to make some strong pantyhose…by freezing them!

It sounds weird, but by freezing your pantyhose it actually strengthens the fibers, helping the material to withstand more tears and last longer. It’s an old trick that’s been passed down for generations – some of us just never got it! Run a new pair under the faucet, place in a freezer bag, and freeze for 24 hours. Let them thaw out naturally – definitely don’t leave them in the freezer until you’re ready to wear them! This technique should help make your hosiery last at least twice as long.
