Americans High Sugar Consumption: Are Hidden Sources to Blame?

Do you know how much sugar you eat, or drink, on a daily basis? It’s probably more than you could ever imagine, even on your most sugar-filled days. According to the American Heart Association, the average American consumes a whopping 22 teaspoons of sugar every day! That’s 335 calories, enough to add 37 pounds in a year if you’re not cutting calories elsewhere!

Most of this sugar comes from the obvious sources like sodas, candy, cookies, and other sweet treats. So, cut these items out and you’re looking at a much lower daily intake. However, there’s also a high proportion hiding in the less obvious stuff, especially in condiments. Ketchup, barbecue sauce, honey mustard and many dressings are loaded with sugar. Kraft original barbecue sauce is made up of 80 percent sugar, and ketchup isn’t too far behind.

Always read labels. Avoid anything with sugar listed as the first ingredient, and try and stick to the serving size. Opt for lower sugar condiments like mustard, or make your own sauces at home!
