Carnie Wilson has done it again: On January 18th, the singer underwent her second weight loss surgery, twelve years after her gastric bypass surgery. Wilson lost 150 pounds after her first surgery, but wasn’t able to keep the weight off. This time around, she opted for lap-band surgery, which places a silicone band around the stomach to create a much smaller stomach – about the size of a golf ball. Wilson, 43, has already lost 30 pounds.
“It was the right decision for me and I’m doing really well so far. It’s all about taking good care of myself,” she told People.
“Having children derailed me a bit,” she said of her struggle to lose the post-pregnancy pounds from daughter Lola, 6, and Luciana, 2.
According to the Bariatric Surgery Specialists website, in general, patients who have gastric bypass are more likely to successfully lose weight than those who undergo a lap band procedure. But lap band surgery is a newer and less invasive procedure, with comparable long term weight loss, and less risk.
The mortality rate is much lower at 1 in 2000 versus 1 in 200 in gastric bypass. Weight loss isn’t as rapid with the lap band, but maybe slow and steady will help Carnie win the race!
