(PCM) Have you cut out bread – or worse, carbohydrates entirely – in order to shed a few pounds? You don’t have to go carb-free in order to lose weight. In fact, eating the right type of carbohydrates can actually help you lose weight.
An American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study found that overweight people who ate all of their grain servings from whole grains lost more belly fat than those who did not eat whole grains. Why? Fiber, fiber, fiber! The fiber found in whole grain foods, like certain breads and cereals, helps slow digestion, which keeps you fuller longer and helps keep blood sugar levels under control. Plus, it’s a lot harder to stick to a diet that completely eliminates a food group, especially carbs!
It doesn’t mean you should snack on slices of wheat bread all day long, and you still want to avoid refined grains like “enriched four,” but moderate amounts of healthy whole grains can be beneficial to your diet. And always read the labels: true whole grain products will have whole wheat or whole grain flour listed as the first ingredient!
