See Jane will launch a philanthropic charm on October 6th in partnership with Altruette! If you aren’t familiar with Altruette, it’s a philanthropic jewelry company that raises money and awareness for non-profits with charms. Each charm represents a non-profit like See Jane, that benefits from the sale of their charm. So, each charm means more support and awareness for the causes you care most about!
See Jane was founded by Academy Award winner Geena Davis in 2004 after being astounded by the dearth of female characters while watching children’s entertainment with her young daughter.
Fueled by her observations, Davis raised funds and commissioned the largest research study ever undertaken on gender prevalence in children’s entertainment and proved that much of children’s entertainment is filled with negative gender biases and stereotyped behaviors.
Take this data for instance: Recent research shows us that males outnumber females 3 to 1 and 5 to 1 in group scenes. These ratios are shocking given the fact that females comprise over 50% of the population in the United States! For more research and shocking discoveries, visit www.seejane.org.
See Jane utilizes research, education and advocacy to engage the entertainment industry to recognize the need for gender balance and varied portrayals of females and male characters into movies, TV, and other media aimed at children 11 and under. See Jane works cooperatively and collaboratively with entertainment creators to encourage them to be leaders in creating positive change.
All proceeds from the charm will go to See Jane! For up-to-date info on the new charm and additional information on Altruette visit www.altruette.com.
