Being beautiful comes with a cost, and we’re not talking financially.
A new study found a link between phthalates – a man-made chemical found in everything from nail polish to hairspray to shampoo – and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston studied women aged 20 to 80 and discovered that those with the highest concentration of the chemicals in their urine were almost twice as likely to have diabetes as those with the lowest concentrations. But even those with moderate levels had an increased risk of nearly 70%. According to reports, the findings held even when other risk-factors were taken into account, such as how many calories the women consumed.
The researchers believe it’s possible that the chemicals interfere with the metabolism of fat tissue, which can lead to insulin resistance.
Men and children aren’t safe either. The researchers warn that phthalates aren’t just used in cosmetics; you’ll find them in everything from vinyl flooring to food packaging to toys. This isn’t the first study highlighting the risks and health concerns about phthalates. Previous research rom the Children’s Environmental Health Center at The Mount Sinai Medical Center also found a link between childhood obesity and exposure to phthalates.
