(PCM) Bone health isn’t just a concern of aging, it’s important to keep them strong and healthy now and as you age. Bones are continuously being broken down and built back in tiny amounts, but after the age of 30, the bone building balance in the body shifts and more bone is lost than gained…by age 30!
Most people know the essentials for proper development and strength of bones: Make sure you’re getting enough calcium and vitamin D, don’t smoke, and exercise. But did you know that certain beverages can also affect bone health? Believe it or not, coffee and alcohol can either hurt or help your bone mass.
Let’s talk coffee: Too much caffeine can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb calcium. According to Time, one study found that drinking more than two cups of coffee a day accelerated bone loss in java-drinkers didn’t consume enough calcium. Another study showed that more than 18 ounces of coffee per day can accelerate bone loss in women by negatively interacting with vitamin D.
Like caffeine, too much of a good thing can be harmful when it comes to alcohol, too. Heavy drinking can cause bone loss by interfering with vitamin D’s job, but moderate consumption is fine; in fact, recent studies show it may actually help slow bone loss. Just be sure to keep your consumption to one drink a day for women, two for men.
