More Evidence Chemicals in Our Food and Environment Contribute to Obesity

Having trouble losing weight? It may not be your fault.

Unfortunately, it’s not just the type of foods we eat that can hurt our chances of losing weight, it’s how the food is treated…even food that is suppose to be healthy.

Study after study suggests that chemicals in our diet play a big role in the weight issues of our nation. The recent CDC prediction that 43% of Americans will be obese by 2030 makes it more important than ever to address the causes of obesity, and actually do something about it. Unfortunately, chemicals are everywhere – in cleaning products, canned foods, in the air we breathe, and sprayed all over our produce – but this also means if we can limit the use of these chemicals, we can drastically reduce the rate of obesity.

The latest evidence comes from a study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives which found that persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including some synthetic pesticides, accumulate in fat cells where they play a role in metabolic syndrome and obesity. According to Rodale, researchers looked at the biochemical effects of common POPs on immature and mature animal fat cells by using gene expression analysis.

These chemicals showed harmful effects in both immature and mature fat cells, but the more severe damage occurs in younger fat cells. Researchers believe the damage comes from inflammation caused by the chemicals.

In other words, chemicals that we come in contact with everyday are accumulating in our fat cells and screwing with our metabolism! If you’re still using air fresheners, heavy-duty cleaners, and buying non-organic produce, it’s time to stop. You’re health depends on it.
