Nutella To Pay Out Millions for Being Unhealthy

Have you purchased a container of Nutella lately? Well, you could make some money – that is if you’re willing to join the class action suit against the chocolate hazelnut spread (and you saved your receipts)!

But who would sue such a delicious, chocolatey delight? Two mothers who were ‘shocked’ to learn that (gasp!) Nutella isn’t healthy after all! Both Laura Rude-Barbato, mother of three, and Athena Hohenberg, a San Diego mother of a 4-year-old daughter took the company to court for false advertising and won.

Rude-Barbato said their television ad which claimed that “Nutella is made with simple, quality ingredients like hazelnuts, skim milk and a hint of coco,” was false.

“I thought it was at least as nutritious as peanut butter if not more and that’s the impression I got from the advertisement. I thought it had health benefits and it clearly doesn’t,” she said. “I felt duped.”

Hohenberg also claimed that she “was shocked to learn” that Nutella “was the next best thing to a candy bar,” according to reports.

I have to admit, I do get a little peeved by the commercials; clearly a product loaded with fat and sugar isn’t the healthiest option, regardless of what you spread it on. In fact, it has 11 grams of fat, 21 grams of sugar, and 200 calories in just two tablespoons. But to be “shocked” and “duped” seems a little ridiculous. It’s a chocolate spread!

Regardless, Nutella will have to pay out over $3 million to settle the class action lawsuit against them. Watch the offending commercial below, and to find out if you qualify to file a claim, click here.
