STD Rates on the Rise Among Seniors

You’re never too old to have sex, but that also means you’re never too old to catch a sexually transmitted disease. Unfortunately, seniors don’t seem to be aware of one of these facts…

New research published in the British Medical Journal shows that 80% of 50 to 90-year-olds are sexually active, but aren’t being cautious when it comes to getting their freak on! Syphilis and chlamydia infections in adults aged 45 to 64 have nearly tripled over the past decade, with cases of Gonorrhea on the rise as well.

Doesn’t wisdom come with age? What’s going on here?

It is the second time around for many seniors. Nearly almost half of Americans over the age of 65 are not married, and they’re living longer and healthier lives than at any other time in history. Online dating among seniors is on the rise, and more and more seniors are living in retirement communities and assisted living facilities, breeding grounds for new romances and hot hook ups.

There’s always the classic “I didn’t think it could happen to me” explanation. The fears and warnings of STI’s and HIV/AIDS were nonexistent 40-50 years ago. Did they even have sex-ed? Without a fear of STDs, condoms may seem unnecessary once women are past child-bearing years. And for older men, wrapping it up has the potential downfall of contributing to erectile dysfunction.

Maybe it’s the Viagra. One thing’s for sure, you’re never too old to get it on, but there comes a time when we could all use a little sex-ed refresher.
