What’s Lurking in Your Makeup Drawer?

Do you know the shelf-life of your makeup products? And no, it’s not just when it runs out! Not only can cosmetics expire and go bad, but all kinds of bacteria, viruses and fungi can be lurking in them! Gross.

Here are the general rules you want to follow to keep your makeup, and your face, fresh and germ-free!

Stick Concealers: If you use a stick concealer that gets directly applied to blemishes, the concealer can pick up that bacteria, so it’s best to toss it within a year. Tip: Use a Q-tip instead of applying the stick directly to the blemish, and toss it!

Lipstick and Gloss: Throw out lipsticks within two years, and sooner if you had a cold sore or other lip infection.

Mascara and Eye Liner: The general rule is to replace these items every three months, according to the FDA. If you get an eye infection, however, toss it right away! The wand is most likely contaminated, upping your risk of either not getting rid of the infection, or it coming back soon.

Foundation and Concealer: Both products should be replaced every six months, but sponges used to apply the makeup should be replaced once a week. If you use a brush it should be cleaned in between applications, and if you’re using your fingers, make sure you  clean your hands well before and after.

Blush and Eye Shadow Powders: These powdery products last much longer than other forms of makeup. You can keep them for as long as two years.

And remember, never share your makeup…especially mascaras, eye liner and lip products which can spread the herpes virus and pink eye. Besides, do you really want other people’s germs on your face?
