(PCM) A recent story published by the New York Times is claiming that the breakfast cereal industry has seen a swift and steady decline over the last few years and they have summed it up to the simple fact that millennials are just too darn lazy to make a bowl. Truly, breakfast cereal is one of the simplest foods to consume. All you need is your cereal of choice, a bowl, spoon and some milk, but it seems that is just too much effort for “kids these days”!
A research survey conducted by Mintel in 2015 claimed that the number one reason that millennials are not consuming breakfast cereal is due to inconvenience. They feel this way because they have to clean up after eating it and can not simply throw an empty container in the garbage. The New York Times also notes a few other reasons why the breakfast cereal industry is on the decline as well.
Many millennials are so busy with work, a.k.a. taking selfies, that they are seeking out more breakfast options that can be consumed on the go and many just opt to skip breakfast all together, despite the fact that it is still looked at as being the most important meal of the day. Other young people have turned to more healthy options such as smoothies and granola rather than sugary breakfast cereals for a more well-balanced breakfast when they are eating a home.
Either way, the breakfast cereal industry is suffering unless they can find some way to turn things around.
