DIY Homemade Hand Sanitizer

(PCM) Keep colds and the dreadful flu far, far away this season with your very own homemade hand sanitizer!

While washing your hands with soap and hot water is the best way to remove germs and stay healthy, the CDC recommends using alcohol-based sanitizing wipes and gels washing your hands isn’t an option. However, some hand sanitizers contain harmful antimicrobial chemicals like triclosan that harm your thyroid, and contaminate water, according to Rodale. Triclosan can also contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant superbugs, and it doesn’t even always kill off all the germs on your hands!

So, use up the store-bought stuff, and save your bottles to fill with a healthier, DIY blend.

Recipe (GreenChiCafe.com):
2 ounces vodka
4 to 5 drops essential oil such as tea tree or eucalyptus, or a combination (avoid companies that use solvents)
2 teaspoons witch hazel
Mix well, and pour into your bottle.

If you don’t want to make your own, look for organic, alcohol-based hand sanitizers with at least 60 percent alcohol.
