Forget those expensive hair treatments your salon charges you hundreds of dollars for; they’re too expensive, full of chemicals, and just not worth it. You can get similar results with a homemade treatment made with all natural products: in other words, it’s cheap and practically free!
Here are a few homemade treatments to get you started!
Dry, brittle hair? Whether it’s from too much styling, a harsh winter, or just bad genetics, your hair is in need of a deep conditioning treatment. Luckily, all you need is a ripe avocado and some mayo! Combine an avocado with about 1/2 cup of mayonnaise. Spread the conditioner on your hair, pile the hair on top of your head and wrap in plastic wrap. Leave it on for about 20 minutes before rinsing it out, then wash and condition your hair as usual.
Need a little shine and lift? Turn to beer! Beer is full of yeast, which helps plump up limp hair, while the B vitamins and proteins add shine and softness to your locks. After shampooing your hair, rinse your hair again with a can of flat beer. Let it sit for a few minutes and rinse out.
To cure an itchy scalp, try a lemon juice and olive oil mixture. According to Woman’s Day, the acidity of lemon juice helps rid your scalp of any loose, dry flakes of skin, and the olive oil moisturizes the newly exposed skin on your scalp! Mix 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice, 2 Tbsp olive oil and 2 Tbsp water, and massage into damp scalp. Let mixture sit for 20 minutes, then rinse and shampoo hair.
Got buildup? Nothing cleans through product buildup like baking soda! Sodium bicarbonate breaks down anything acidic, which will leave your hair feeling squeaky clean. Mix 1 to 2 Tbsp baking soda with a bit of water until a thick paste forms. Massage into damp hair and let sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with water, then shampoo hair. Apply it every 2-3 weeks if you use a lot of hair products.
Oily scalp? Dry shampoos work well, too, and are fairly inexpensive, but cornstarch is even cheaper, and you probably already have it in your pantry. Pour 1 tbsp cornmeal or cornstarch into an empty salt shaker and sprinkle onto dry, oily hair. After 10 minutes, brush it out and you should see much less oil.
