Health Tip of the Day: Shake Your Soy Milk!

So you made the switch from cow’s milk to soy milk to up your calcium intake? Unfortunately, while soy milk does contain added calcium, you may not be reaping all the benefits.

However, getting all the nutrients could be as simple as shaking the bottle. According to CookingLight, the calcium tends to settle at the bottom of the carton, forming a sludge that can then be tough to redistribute into the milk. So when you get to the bottom of the carton and all you see is sludge, chances are, it’s going in the trash … and so is the calcium.

Make sure you’re shaking the carton before each use, and don’t rely on soy milk for all of your calcium needs. According to a study from Creighton University in Nebraska, fortified soy milks may deliver only 25% to 79% of the promised calcium.

Other foods high in calcium include cheese, yogurt, beans, spinach, and dark leafy greens.
