(PCM) In order to become famous, you have to start young, right? Ballet class in the evenings after pre-school, play auditions on summer break, commercials by the time you’re a teenager. Any other path won’t lead you to success because you have to begin a career in the entertainment world practically by the time you learn to walk.
Most people don’t realize that there are plenty of successful and famous people who began later in life, as far along as their 30s, 40s and even 50s. From well known chefs to musicians you aspire to be like, many of the people we look up to didn’t start out on the track they ended up on.
Harrison Ford
Harrison Ford wasn’t an actor at the age of 30 – he was a carpenter with a crummy line of small acting roles behind him. George Lucas offered him a role in American Graffiti, which launched Ford’s acting career from barely breathing to full-on star. It did take him another six years to be a household name, though, after he starred in Star Wars as Hans Solo.
Jon Hamm
It’s hard to picture Jon Hamm, who plays Don Draper on Mad Men as anything but successful. He almost wasn’t an actor, though. His self-imposed deadline of becoming a successful actor by the age of 30 was fast approaching. The last thing he wanted to do was become another waiter in his 40s that was still looking for acting roles that were never going to come. When he was 29, Hamm was cast in the TV show Providence and by the time he was 30, he had a role in the movie We Were Soldiers.
Julia Child
Every good cook has stories of preparing meals with their mother when they were still in grade school, right? Not in Julie Child’s case. By the time she was married, she could barely boil an egg. Her first career path was in writing and advertising. Her second was in the Central Intelligence Agency. It wasn’t until she moved to France with her husband that she fell in love with French cuisine and cooking.
Martha Stewart
Martha Stewart wasn’t always the creative homemaker she is today. First, she was a stockbroker. When she and her husband bought a farmhouse circa 1805 that was in much need of restoration, she became interested in decorating. She also launched a catering business out of the basement. Soon, she found herself giving homemaking and entertaining advice on Oprah Winfrey’s show.
Sylvester Stallone
Most people know Sylvester Stallone as Rocky, the character he played in the mega-hit movie series. When Stallone wrote the screenplay for the first “Rocky,” though, he was so broke he had resorted to selling his wife’s jewelry and he also sold his beloved dog. Even though he had offers in the $300,000 range for the scripts, he wouldn’t settle until he found a buyer who’d let him star in the film. Settling for a measly $35,000 proved to be Stallone’s best move – we all know how his story ended up.
